Abstract

Problematic. Organizational trust, particularly the trust that higher education students have in their peers, teachers and authorities, has been an understudied topic in educationalr research, especially in Latin America. Moreover, trust-building has not been explicitly incorporated as a goal within school management activities. Objectives. This study aims to assess the levels of trust that higher education students have towards their peers, teachers and authorities at their educational institutions, as well as the relationships of trust with other variables identified through a literature review as significantly related. Materials and Methods. An exploratory study with a mixed-methods approach (Quant-Qual) was conducted. A total of 232 responses were analyzed from students students in Mexico City and the state of Hidalgo. The instrument used included a Likert scale and open-ended questions, covering five dimensions and 30 items. Frequency analysis and linear regression exercises were carried out using normalized data. Results. While 77% of students reported high and very high levels of trust towards their peers, only 30.6% expressed such levels of trust toward institutional authorities, and 39% toward their teachers. Discussion. Organizational theory provides relevant insights into the dynamics and relationships among stakeholders within educational institutions. The elements associated with improving these, suggested by Hoy et al. (2006), such as humanistic, inclusive, equitable, and quality based values, require evaluation within Mexican universities to identify their alignment with these values and determine how the lack of adherence to these values may influence trust levels. Conclusions. The findings show a non-optimal state of organizational trust, highlighting various challenges and opportunities for improvemen in school management.
